November in Wrocław can feel a little grey, but Jazztopad has a reliable way of bringing some life to the city. The festival returns from 13 to 22 November for its 23rd edition, with concerts taking place at the National Forum of Music (NFM), Klubokawiarnia Mleczarnia and, as always, a handful of private flats around the city.
The programme moves between established names, new collaborations and experimental projects, with plenty for listeners who like their jazz a little less predictable.
One of the biggest events comes on 20 November, when the National Forum of Music hosts the European premiere of an opera by Wayne Shorter and Esperanza Spalding. Other notable appearances include Amir ElSaffar Quartet, South African pianist Nduduzo Makhathini with the Lutosławski Quartet, and a festival-closing performance by William Parker, Shabaka and Hamid Drake.
There is a strong international presence throughout the programme, including Korean improviser DoYeon Kim, as well as projects involving Raphael Rogiński, Sissel Vera Pettersen and Meredith Bates.
From NFM to a Wrocław flat
One of the nicest things about Jazztopad is that it doesn't stay in one place.
The concerts at NFM provide the grand setting, while Mleczarnia takes over for late-night performances and improvised sessions. Then there are the private-flat concerts, which have become something of a festival tradition.
These are small, daytime performances with audiences gathering in people's homes rather than conventional concert venues. The details are announced later, and tickets are limited, but this year's flat concerts are planned for 14, 15, 21 and 22 November.
It is a very different experience from sitting in the main hall at NFM, and one that fits particularly well with the festival's interest in improvisation and close contact between musicians and listeners.
A packed final weekend
The programme gets particularly busy from 19 November onwards.
Darius Jones Trio and Nduduzo Makhathini with the Lutosławski Quartet perform on 19 November, followed by the Shorter-Spalding opera on the 20th.
On 21 November, Musho and Hamid Drake share the programme with DoYeon Kim Quartet, while Mleczarnia hosts Sissel Vera Pettersen and Meredith Bates later that evening.
The festival closes on 22 November with William Parker, Shabaka and Hamid Drake at NFM.
For those who are not quite ready to call it a night after a concert, Jazztopad has another option. Sundogs will lead free improvised sessions at Mleczarnia after selected NFM concerts on 13, 14 and 15 November, and again on 19, 20 and 21 November.
There is something for younger listeners too, with Jazz Morning Kids! at Kino Nowe Horyzonty on the morning of 15 November.
Tickets and festival passes are already available for most events. The Shahzad Ismaily performance on 15 November, taking place at a surprise location, has already sold out.
With its mixture of major concerts, small venues, late-night improvisation and music in private homes, Jazztopad gives Wrocław another reason to head out into the city during one of the quieter parts of the year.
