Consonances: Eighty Years of Artistic Dialogue in Wrocław

For eight decades, Wrocław's Academy of Fine Arts has brought different artistic voices together, and its anniversary exhibition explores what emerges from that dialogue.

Art can speak through many forms. It can be painted, sculpted, designed or constructed, but it can also create connections between people, generations and ways of understanding the world.

That idea lies at the centre of Consonances, a jubilee exhibition marking the 80th anniversary of the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław. Hosted by the National Forum of Music, the exhibition brings together work connected with the Academy's artistic and design community while reflecting on the relationships that have shaped its history.

The exhibition will open at the NFM foyer at Plac Wolności 1 on 9 October 2026 and can be viewed until December 2026. Its curators are Marta Borgosz, Beata Mak-Sobota, Marek Grzyb, Piotr Kuczkowski and Grzegorz Niemyjski.

An anniversary shaped by exchange

The Academy's 80 years have seen generations of lecturers and students come and go, alongside changes in working methods, technologies and spaces. What the exhibition seeks to emphasise is what has remained constant: the institution's role as a place where artists and designers work together, exchange knowledge and develop their creative practice.

That exchange is central to the meaning of Consonances. The title suggests harmony, but the exhibition's understanding of harmony is not about uniformity. Instead, it describes a process through which different disciplines, perspectives and forms of expression can exist alongside one another and influence each other.

The Academy is presented as a meeting place for these different approaches. Ideas can emerge through mutual influence and through the search for a shared creative language, allowing work to move beyond the boundaries of individual disciplines.

For an anniversary exhibition, this makes the relationship between the works as important as the individual works themselves.

A different kind of resonance

The decision to present Consonances at the National Forum of Music adds another layer to that idea.

The exhibition's location creates an association with music and with concepts such as harmony, resonance and the interpenetration of different voices. Within this setting, the Academy's artistic community is represented as an environment in which disciplines and perspectives do not need to compete. Instead, they can inspire one another.

Paintings, sculptures, designs and objects form the basis for a broader reflection on artistic activity, directing attention towards spirit, emotion and poetic interpretation.

The exhibition also places tradition and experimentation alongside one another. The anniversary provides an opportunity to look at the continuation of an established artistic and educational mission while recognising the importance of openness to new ideas, experimentation and the search for originality.

In that sense, Consonances look beyond a celebration of longevity. Its central idea is that an artistic institution remains active through the relationships created within it, as knowledge passes between generations and different forms of creative thinking encounter one another.

After 80 years, the Academy's story is therefore not presented as a single artistic voice. It is a collection of voices, experiences and disciplines that continue to meet, influence one another and create new possibilities through dialogue.
